SUPPORT THE MOTHERWELL TRAIN DRIVERS
ASLEF train drivers for England Wales Scotland
(EWS) in Motherwell are refusing to move arms and ammunition. The government
had planned to move arms by rail to send to the Gulf. This action is supported
by 15 drivers who are determined not to move any loads that could be used
against the Iraqi people.
Train drivers first refused to move the ammunition between Glasgow and
the Glen Douglas weapons dump on Wednesday 8th January. Efforts by EWS
management to persuade them to do it on the following days failed. EWS
and government denials that this is happening are untrue. It has been
confirmed by well-placed sources in the rail industry and has been discussed
in parliament.
We are spreading this information because we are opposed to working class
people slaughtering each other over oil. The purpose of the war is to
allow US corporations to take over Iraqi oil fields. It won’t bring
a better government for Iraq, just a pro-US dictatorship. There is no
real evidence that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.
It is important to know what workers up and down the country are doing
to try and prevent this war and that we all do everything we can to support
anti-war actions. We urge you to pass on this information; discuss it
among your colleagues and at union meetings; and support any other action
your colleagues take against the war.
It is also important that the Motherwell drivers are not left isolated
by their union leaders. We urge all railworkers, both in ASLEF and in
RMT, to pass motions of support; to refuse work normally undertaken by
Motherwell; to work to their dockets during the coming weeks and months
and not take on extra work that will aid Bush and Blair in their slaughter
of Iraqi civilians.
